Research

Research is...
to investigate fully, a careful or diligent search, studious inquiry or examination, investigation or experimentation aimed at the discovery and interpretation of facts, revision of accepted theories or law in the light of new facts.

The department of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery is dedicated to the University of Illinois's three fold mission of Teaching, Research, and Public Service. Our faculty and staff are committed to providing excellence in patient care in concert with a carefully structured resident physician teaching program. In addition to clinical and didactic responsibilities, the faculty, research staff and residents are actively involved in innovative medical research that focuses on the discovery of new and improved methods for the management and treatment of patients in the field of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery.

Otolaryngology-HNS is a surgical field of medicine that includes several sub-specialties including audiology, facial plastic and reconstructive surgery, laryngology, neurotology/skull base surgery, otology, sinus surgery, speech pathology and head and neck surgery. Our physicians are highly trained professionals and experts in their respective fields of practice. They maintain their high level of expertise by attending and presenting at key medical conferences, reviewing the current literature, and actively searching to improve their respective fields of interest through basic, preclinical, and clinical research.

As a member of the U of I academic community, our department has access to the University's vast technological and professional resources. Experts in all medical and general academic fields of study are readily accessible and eager to share their knowledge for the advancement of science. The combination of innovative ideas, in conjunction with expert collaborative support and the University's extensive technological and physical resources, yields an environment ideal for scientific research.

The faculty, in tandem with a talented research staff with over 50 years of experience, manage all aspects of the research process from initial study design and preparation of preclinical and clinical protocols to manuscript submission for publication. The department maintains over 3000 square feet of space for basic and preclinical research, an accredited GLP laboratory along with a dedicated laboratory for decalcified and non-decalcified histology, and a state of the art 15 station temporal bone laboratory used for teaching the intricacies of temporal bone anatomy and surgery. In addition to departmental resources, the University of Illinois Medical Center maintains the largest preclinical surgical facility in the mid-west for new product, procedure and device evaluation prior to clinical trails.

In addition to our own internal and grant funded research endeavors, our faculty and staff collaborate with corporations in the design, development, testing and evaluation of new and promising medical technologies. Our broad range of research capabilities enable our collaborative efforts to proceed on all research levels from basic and preclinical investigation to clinical trials. Our department also conducts corporate contract work for companies that require an independent and reliable source of testing and data evaluation in order to proceed with 510K and FDA submission procedures.

The department of Otolaryngology-HNS is dedicated, through the combination of careful planning, expert knowledge, and meticulous execution, to conducting the highest quality of research in every project we undertake. If you would like to learn more about our faculty and staff and the current research being conducted in our department please visit our Pre-Clinical Currents in Research and Clinical Currents in Research web sites. Or if you are a corporation, organization or individual interested in discussing research ideas, or opportunities for future research collaboration, please contact our research coordinator Kevin M. O'Grady at kogrady@uic.edu or call 312/996/6508.

A problem is simply an opportunity in disguise, awaiting a solution
through the interaction of directed creative thought and positive initiative.
